Therapy is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Services can be tailored to your unique needs, preferences, and goals. Whether you prefer short-term focused therapy or longer-term support, a licensed professional counselor can work with you to create a treatment plan that best suits your individual circumstances.
One of the key benefits of therapy is the presence of a compassionate and non-biased therapist who is dedicated to supporting your well-being. They are trained to ask the right questions, provide insightful perspectives, and offer practical tools to help you navigate your struggles. Through their expertise, a mental health professional can help you gain a deeper understanding of yourself, identify patterns that may be holding you back, and develop healthier ways of thinking and coping.
In my 10 years in the mental health field, I've developed a range of tools and methods for helping my clients. My private practice is the culmination of my years in individual and group therapy sessions and working with other mental health professionals that have decades of training and experience. Simply put, I've learned from the best.
Although I have worked in a range of mental health and behavioral disorders, I've found that I enjoy most with patients who are looking to do their emotional depth work, moving into their unconscious programming where difficult emotions and parts of the person are hidden and unexplored.
In the following sections, we will explore the specific benefits of therapy, the types of therapy available, and how therapy can empower you to overcome your struggles and live a more fulfilling life.
Hello! I'm Ryan, a compassionate and experienced licensed clinical therapist dedicated to guiding individuals on their journey towards emotional well-being and personal growth.
Having worked in a variety of settings, from low-income to luxury, from the US to Europe, I have developed a deep understanding of the complexities of the human mind and a passion for helping others. I create a safe and supportive space for individuals to explore their inner self and also challenge them in the areas they need to be challenges.
There are two main qualities that I bring as a counselor that come from outside my mental health counseling experience; 1) My time playing and coaching college athletics and 2) My experience playing and performing music. I combine the focus and concentration of athletics with my love for expression and deep connection.
Whether you're dealing with anxiety, depression, issues in relationships, stress, life transitions, or family conflict, you can expect to gain valuable insights, develop effective coping strategies, and discover your inner strengths from my services.
I'm here to provide the support and guidance you need to navigate your unique journey. Embark on this transformative experience with me and embark on a path towards a more fulfilling and balanced life.
As I've said before, I've had the benefit of working and training in different mental health environments. Let me tell you a little but more about the types of the licensed clinical counseling I provide.
I believe that people are creative, whole, and resourceful, and that the purpose of therapy is to unlock the hidden resources of each person so that they can broaden their strengths and capabilities to meet the challenges they meet in life. I work with adults and young people over the age of 18. I use evidence based approaches feel comfortable tuning my approach to the needs of my clients.
Attachment-Based
I believe that our early relationships and attachment experiences shape our sense of self and our ability to form healthy connections with others. Drawing from this understanding, my therapeutic approach focuses on exploring and addressing attachment patterns and wounds that may have originated in childhood. As an attachment-based therapist, I am trained to recognize the various types of attachments individuals may have formed during their early developmental years. These attachments can influence how we navigate relationships, manage emotions, and cope with life's challenges. By delving into the complexities of attachment, I can provide my clients the necessary support and skilled holding for you to process and heal from trauma.
Internal Family Systems
In addition to my attachment-based therapeutic approach, I am also trained in psychosynthesis and internal family systems, two complementary modalities that delve into the inner workings of the human psyche. Both approaches recognize that within each person, there are different parts or sub-personalities that influence our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.
Psychosynthesis and internal family systems share the belief that these parts function as internal families, each with its own unique perspective, motives, and beliefs. By exploring and understanding these parts, we can uncover the underlying drivers that shape our lives and contribute to our struggles.
In this type of therapy, we work together to identify and engage with these different parts, allowing us to gain insight into their concerns, conflicts, and interactions. By bringing awareness and understanding to these inner dynamics, we can begin to address the underlying sources of stress and discord within our internal system that continues to show up in our life.
Psychodynamic
In addition to my expertise in attachment-based therapy, psychosynthesis, and internal family systems, I am also well-versed in the modality of psychodynamic therapy. This approach delves into the exploration of our defenses and unconscious processes that can hinder the processing of emotional experiences crucial for healing and personal growth.
In psychodynamic therapy, we aim to uncover and understand the underlying patterns, conflicts, and defenses that may be shaping our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. By shining a light on these unconscious dynamics, we can gain insight into how past experiences and unresolved conflicts continue to influence our present lives.
Through individual counseling sessions and psychodynamic group work, I have accumulated extensive experience in this therapeutic modality. I have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of psychodynamic therapy as clients gain awareness and understanding of the deep-rooted factors that contribute to their current struggles.
By identifying and exploring defense mechanisms, we can begin to dismantle the barriers that prevent us from fully processing and integrating our emotional experiences. This process can lead to increased self-awareness, emotional healing, and a greater capacity to engage in meaningful and fulfilling lives.
By having this diverse toolset, I'm able to engage my clients challenges in different ways, choosing the mode that can support them the most. Let's take a look at which clients can benefit and see if my approach is a fit for you.
Anxiety and Depression
Anxiety and depression disorders, indeed, often go hand in hand and can create significant obstacles to making life transitions and moving forward. I share your perspective that they can be seen as two sides of the same coin, each impacting our ability to engage with the difficult task of progress and change.
Depression can manifest as a slowing down, a weight that hampers our motivation and energy levels. It can be a response to unresolved emotions, past traumas, or a sense of feeling stuck. It serves as a signal from our body and mind that something within us requires attention and healing. Often times there is trauma and grief and loss that lie hidden underneath these feelings that create mood disorders such as depression.
Similarly, anxiety arises as a reaction to feeling unsafe or uncertain about moving forward. It can manifest as excessive worry, fear, and a sense of restlessness. Anxiety is the body's way of signaling potential threats and activating our fight-or-flight response, often hindering our ability to take necessary steps towards growth and change.
I specialize in providing support to individuals who are navigating relationship challenges who are sometimes also in couples counseling with a marriage and family therapist. In a bustling area like the DC area, where many couples are focused on their professional goals and aspirations, it is not uncommon for anxiety to emerge within relationships. This can apply to young adult couples as well as married couples.
With my experience in working with families and couples in various programs, I have developed expertise in teaching and coaching individuals on healthy communication and expression. Effective communication is a fundamental pillar of successful relationships, and I can help you acquire the skills needed to express yourself authentically and foster deeper connections with your partner.
Addiction
With my extensive experience in working with clients and families struggling with addiction, I have developed a deep understanding of the key issues that need to be addressed in the counseling setting. I recognize that addiction can have a profound impact on individuals and their loved ones, and I am committed to providing the necessary support and guidance on the path to recovery.
The states of Virginia and Connecticut have robust support networks and communities dedicated to assisting individuals dealing with addiction. These support groups can be instrumental in providing a safe space for individuals to share their experiences, find understanding, and receive support from others who have walked a similar path. Drawing from my knowledge of these resources, I can help guide you in connecting with these supportive networks and developing a healthy support system that can aid in your healing process.
As a trauma-informed counselor, I am dedicated to helping individuals heal from the underlying traumas that often contribute to anxiety and depression. Traumatic experiences can have a profound and lasting impact on our mental and emotional well-being, and it is crucial to address these underlying wounds in order to achieve lasting healing and growth.
Many adults struggle with the effects of undiagnosed or unaddressed traumas, which can manifest in various ways, including anxiety, depression, and difficulties in relationships and daily functioning. As a trauma-informed therapist, I am trained to provide a safe and supportive space for individuals to explore and process their traumatic experiences.
I can help you navigate the complexities of trauma and work towards healing and recovery. Together, we will create a therapeutic alliance built on trust, empathy, and collaboration. I will assist you in identifying and understanding the impact of trauma on your life and help you develop effective coping strategies to manage symptoms and regain control over your emotions and behaviors.
Attachment
Addressing safety within relationships is a crucial aspect of therapy, especially for individuals who struggle with attachment issues. Attachment-related challenges can manifest in a variety of symptoms and impact our ability to form and maintain healthy connections with others. As a therapist, I have the knowledge and understanding to guide you on a path of self-growth, fostering intimacy and safety not only within relationships but within your life as a whole.
A common symptom experienced by individuals with attachment issues is profound anxiety. This anxiety can be disruptive, affecting the way we perceive and process information. It can lead to feeling trapped in a state of chronic stress, causing us to unknowingly underreact or overreact to stressful situations.
Arlington Virginia boasts a tapestry of diverse paths for personal growth and self-exploration, given its multicultural population. While specific practices may vary, we all share a common desire to connect with our most authentic selves. As a trained psychosynthesis practitioner, I offer a unique perspective that incorporates the exploration of the higher self as part of my counseling services, should you wish to delve into that realm.
Psychosynthesis is a therapeutic approach that recognizes and integrates the spiritual dimension of the individual. It acknowledges that we have an inner core, often referred to as the higher self or the transpersonal self, which holds our innate wisdom, purpose, and potential. By accessing and aligning with this higher self, we can tap into a deep source of guidance, meaning, and fulfillment.
While many therapeutic models may not explicitly address the exploration of the higher self, I believe that incorporating this aspect can be immensely beneficial for individuals on their journey of self-discovery and healing. By incorporating spiritual dimensions into therapy, we can create a holistic approach that encompasses the mind, body, and spirit.
Working with a therapist or psychologist can provide numerous benefits, including gaining self-awareness, developing coping strategies, improving communication skills, exploring and resolving emotional issues, finding support and validation, and fostering personal growth and resilience.
Counseling can help individuals improve their emotional and mental well-being by providing a safe and supportive space to explore and express their thoughts and feelings. It can assist in managing stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions.
Therapy facilitates self-exploration, allowing individuals to gain a deeper understanding of themselves, their motivations, and patterns of behavior. Through this self-awareness, we are then able to make a conscious choice about our actions.

Here we have some FAQs associated with counseling in the Arlington area. In addition, I'm always happy to provide answers to questions you may have in our individual counseling consultation.
Within the helping professions there are several categories of mental health professionals in Arlington, VA; licensed clinical social worker, licensed clinical psychologist, marriage and family therapist, clinical psychologist, and licensed professional counselor.
These titles denote a specific type of education and credentialing. All of these professions have the professional capacity to call themselves therapists. Therapists are clinical professionals who apply their knowledge and experience in psychotherapy, the traditional means of helping individuals in a clinical setting. This may sound like an obvious answer, except when you consider that many of the people who get these degrees don't always end up practicing psychotherapy, they fulfill other education or executive or policy type positions.
Finding a psychologist or psychotherapist who is a good fit for you is important for the success of therapy. The therapeutic alliance, which is the collaborative and trusting relationship between the therapist and the client, has been found to be one of the most important factors in therapeutic outcomes.
It's worth noting that finding the right therapist may require some trial and error. It's helpful to explore different options and even have initial consultations with multiple therapists to assess the fit before committing to ongoing therapy. Trusting your instincts and finding a therapist who has the qualities that you value can greatly enhance the therapeutic process and increase the likelihood of positive outcomes.
Some important topics to consider within the relationship with the therapist are; cultural and social experiences, what is the general feeling and quality of the interaction with the therapist, are there feelings of safety and non-judgement. Ask yourself, Do I see myself opening up and talking about difficult things with this person? Ultimately its our ability to be honest emotionally that will determine our success.
Knowing when you should see a therapist is a difficult question for many. If you're asking me - I'd say everyone! Because I know how much value people can get out of it even if they have issues that are "sub-clinical" levels, we can always grow and be happier.
Some of the signs to look out for in knowing when you might need to see a therapist revolve around patterns, patterns that continue to show up both inside of you and also externally in your environment. This is known as being stuck and points to the likeliness that there are internal unconscious forces that are driving your behavior, and that utilizing therapy to mine out and understand those forces can help you break free of them.
Other symptoms include persistent feelings of overwhelm, difficulty coping with a challenge or life transition, relationship issues that continue to worsen, addictive processes that worsen or broaden in type of addictions, chronic stress, loss of enjoyment and increase in dreading activities.
Keep in mind, everyone's experience is unique. But if you're asking yourself the question if therapy is right for you, that in and of itself is a good to explore and find out what might be going on with someone who is familiar and has practice in helping people through it.
