Modern life living in the bustling city can be tough. With all the distractions, screens, politics, and otherwise, we constantly have things pulling at our attention - even if we don't realize it.
For many, they've been able to push through and make ends meet, but only to have another mountain to climb right in front of them.
Slowly, over time, the joy that was once found can get harder to obtain. Even the successes don't feel as good anymore.
Therapy may not be everyone's choice - but I believe it can be for everyone. Whether its life transitions, personal growth, or specific mental health needs, there is no reason to not use the modern tools needed to survive and thrive in the modern world.
Choosing the right therapist makes all the difference. In this article I will outline some of the key factors in engaging with therapy and finding the right mental health professional for you as there are many therapists in Alexandria VA to choose from.
Are you struggling with low energy? Are you having issues in your relationships? Is it getting a bit alarming to experience your mental health decline?
Whatever your reason for looking into therapy, it means that there's a part of you that's looking to change. Whether its being worn out, health issues, stress, or having trouble with a current situation, there is no reason to not seek support.
Of course, because you've made it thus far and have been successful in life, you also have that part of you that doesn't feel comfortable with therapy. That it may be for other people and not you, or perhaps you've never really open up and shared your true concerns with someone before and the whole thing just feels daunting.
The healthy person always has an objection to therapy. It's normal, and is generally part of the process of asking for help.
The first step step is to ask yourself truly, is there a part of me that's not working well, that would benefit from exploring what the core issue is and engaging in the process of self growth?

For many people therapy has been thought of as something for people with mental health conditions or disorders. Even though the stigma of receiving mental health services has been lessened, just the word "mental" insinuates something way more profound than what is actually happening in a therapist's office.
In my opinion, whats actually happening is that people are ready to grow into their true self. A natural progression of doing away with the old and bringing in the new. I'm a firm believer that having struggles is a positive sign. It means you're moving forward and ready to move on, bringing your inner world into balance.
In lots of occasions people receive benefits just from the first few sessions from speaking with a mental health professional. As a profession, we are highly trained, and know how to put life stress and issues into a more manageable framework. A lot of my clients receive profound relief when they learn that I understand the challenges they face and have the skills to help guide them through their process.
Once I know more about your situation, I will work with you to give you the education and tools you need to begin the healing as soon as possible. By utilizing my diverse toolkit, the psychotherapy I provide is able to help a wide variety of people.
Let me tell you a little bit about me and my approach.
I've been working in the mental health field for 10 years and pride myself on having worked with a diverse set of mental health issues and populations.
There are 2 main experiences that I bring to my counseling services; 1) My experience in playing music and 2) My experience playing and coaching on a competitive baseball team. I combine the strength and discipline of athletics with the feel and openness that music provides.
Beyond the diverse and intensive trainings I receive, these are still the two biggest qualities that I draw from, and that many clients report appreciating throughout psychotherapy process.
My online therapy practice has allowed me to move across continents and work with different cultures in different countries. I draw from this experience, having both lived daily life and worked in different countries affords me a broad perspective to treat clients whose life paths are different than mine.
Not everyone is familiar with the psychotherapy terms, and truly you don't need to. But for those that are looking for specifics let me outline some of the modes and treatment processes I provide.
I believe that people are creative, whole, and resourceful, and that the purpose of therapy is to unlock the hidden resources of each person so that they can broaden their strengths and capabilities to meet the challenges they're destined to meet.
The basis of the therapy that I provide comes from an attachment-based therapeutic approach. This means I am trained in understanding the type of attachments and attachment wounds a person may inherit as part of their early development as children. From this understanding, I am able to provide the skilled holding to allow a person to work through their trauma and move towards an attachment they can bring into healthy relationships.
In addition this foundation, I have also been trained in psychosynthesis and internal family systems. I put these two together because they are similar in many ways. Both modes believe that people can have parts or sub-personalities that work as internal families directing our decisions and our actions. In this type of therapy, when we break down some of these parts we are able to reveal the motives and beliefs that drive our lives. When we are struggling, its often these parts that are constantly sharing their concerns and putting our system under stress.
The last modality that I use is psychodynamic. In this modality we are looking to investigate what are defenses might be that prevent us from processing the emotional experiences that we need to treat and engage in the healing of our lives. I have run thousands of hours of psychodynamic groups and individual counseling sessions using this modality and use it often in my treatment.
By having this diverse toolset, I'm able to engage my clients challenges in different ways, choosing the mode that can support them the most.
One of the most important aspects of the counseling code of ethics is to be clear about what populations we are trained and capable to serve. Below are some of the most common groups I have served and have full confidence my treatment can help.
Anxiety and depression are some of the most common mental health services that people look to address. For me, anxiety and depression are like two sides of the same coin. They often prevent us from executing the life transitions we're looking to make as they prevent us from engage with the difficult task of moving forward.
I believe that depression is the way that the body slows itself from moving forward because their unresolved or stuck emotions. Anxiety is similar, as its the body's reaction to feeling unsafe about moving forward.
I can help you move through the challenges through counseling you through the tensions that are preventing you from moving forward, opening you up to freedom from the unhelpful stress.
I specialize in working with people who are struggling with relationships or are also working in couples counseling simultaneously. Especially with lots of successful couples in the dc area both attending to professional goals and aspirations, its common that anxiety within the relationship can emerge both for young adult couples and in addition to marriage as well.
Having worked with families in couples in family programs, I'm skilled in teaching and coaching individuals into learning healthy communication and expression. As well, if your struggling to find the connection you're looking for in relationships I can help you in developing the skills to connect more deeply with your partner.
Having spent many years working intensely with clients and families struggling with addiction, I'm familiar with understanding the key issues to tackle in the counseling setting.
Virginia and Connecticut have great support groups for assisting with addiction and a robust community to draw from. With my experience, I can help guide people in developing a healthy network where they can continue to talk and heal from this affliction.
As a trauma-informed counselor in Alexandria VA, I'm trained at treating the underlying traumas that often create the anxiety and depression that people suffer from. Many adults struggle through life due to undiagnosed traumas. Contact me if you feel like you could benefit from counseling from a mental health professional.
Similar and often related to trauma is addressing people who struggle with safety in relationship. Attachment issues can present in a wide range of symptoms. Working with me, you can expect me to have the knowledge and understanding for self growth in intimacy and safety, not only within relationships, but within life itself.
The most common symptom here is a profound anxiety which continuously disrupts the quality of the information we take in, often leaving us trapped in stress and unknowingly under or over reacting when we experience stress.
Alexandria Virginia has a diverse array of spiritual and religious communities. Although the specific practices may be different, we are all part of the process of growing and exploring our most true self. As a trained psychosynthesis practitioner, I am experienced exploring aspects of the higher self as part of my counseling services, should that be something you want to explore.
As a profession, I've found that therapists tend to stay away from the topic as most therapeutic models don't incorporate this part of the Self, however, there are many people that would benefit from including this part in their treatment.
Here are some common frequently asked questions about working with a therapist in Alexandria Virginia. If you have any additional questions regarding mental health issues or about counseling services in general, I always make myself available to answer questions. My free consult is available to schedule whenever you're ready, I'd be happy to make that appointment happen for you.
In Old Town Alexandria and the Northern Virginia area you will see lots of different descriptions of mental health professionals. Some have different specialties, titles, or backgrounds. There are psychologists, specialists in couples therapy, play therapy, specialists for adolescents and those that specialize in family conflict.
The main helping professions are psychiatrist, psychologist, social worker, and counselor. All of which with address stand psychotherapeutic issues such as stress, life transitions, anxiety, and depression. Although the labels maybe different - most helping professionals in practice are similar in the counseling that they provide.
One of the most confused distinctions however is between counselor and therapist. The profession of counseling evolved originally out of career counseling or guidance counseling. Over time, it grew and evolved as other helping professions have to include the more traditionally developed therapy.
Most counselors will identify as a therapist, but some counselor still retain an identity closer to its roots, such as a school counselor.
Finding a psychologist or quality psychotherapist can be a lot like dating. Research continues to show that the "therapeutic alliance" is the key ingredient towards a client's self growth. Therapy is the work of a team. Think of the qualities that you valye most and contact a practitioner that you sense has those qualities.
Don't be afraid to "date around" before deciding on a psychotherapist. This is one of the reason I offer the free consult, because I want us to be able to have an interaction to inform you of the feel and quality of conversation you're looking for.
Once you find someone that you connect with with its important that the specialize or have appropriate skills for what you're looking to do. Of course, its impossible to know exactly what to expect, but do your best in making sure that it makes sense before you schedule and appointment.
The benefit of therapy is 100% there - if you're willing to do the work. In my experience, when people commit to their healing process the process unfolds before them. My personal belief is that we are wired to heal in relationship with others in this experience called "life" that will continuously throw us curveballs. Therapy is the meeting of these fundamental truths and one of the reason I have devoted myself to the profession of mental health.
According to the ongoing meta-analysis of psychotherapy, there continues to be a consistent positive outcome for people who engage in treatment versus those that do not. Studies in this category go back over 40 years of evidence.
Despite these clear facts, there can be times where it may be best to hold off on therapy. In order to get the most out of therapy, it requires time outside of therapy to support the work. Just like anything, if you want to do well its important to make healthy changes a part of your lifestyle. This doesn't mean turning into an obsessive therapy geek - but it does mean that making the most of the sessions and committing to exploring potentially uncomfortable feelings.
As an office that doesn't take insurance directly, often clients are resistant to make the emotional investment. But when put into context of the potential, long-lasting benefits, there is no comparison to what you can potential recieve!
